Google AI Test Kitchen
Google's public playground for trying early LaMDA demos as an app. In August 2023 the mobile apps were delisted and the experience was folded into the web — the clearest example in this archive of a shutdown that was not a death.
Original intent · 初衷
The point was access: instead of publishing a model and leaving it at that, Google opened a rotating set of demos so ordinary users could poke at an early language model and feel where it failed. Three initial demos shipped with the promise of more, and the project framed itself as a series of seasons rather than a product.

The Android and iOS apps are delisted; Google confirms through a spokesperson that the mobile apps are shutting down and the playground is moving to the web. The apps stop working within hours.
Dates are shown at the precision the sources provide; nothing is rounded up to a full date.
What happened · 后来发生了什么
A second season was teased, with details of new tools, and then dropped in favour of adding MusicLM at Google I/O 2023 while support for the earlier demos ended. On 1 August 2023 the mobile apps were delisted from both stores; a Google spokesperson confirmed the mobile apps were shutting down and that the playground was moving to the web so it could be updated more rapidly across devices. The apps stopped working hours later and pushed users to the web. As of verification, the Play listing returns 404 and the old product domain resolves to a Google Labs surface describing a different project.
Why it stopped · 停止原因
For the mobile apps, the stated reason was maintainability: one web experience can be updated more rapidly and easily across devices than separate Android, iOS and web releases. No reason is publicly stated for the eventual end of the web playground itself.

Facts cite a source. Author statements are the makers' own words. Curator analysis and hypotheses are marked as interpretation.
Editor's reading: this entry is in the archive to demonstrate the archive's own rule. A headline reading 'Google killed AI Test Kitchen in 2023' would be wrong: what ended was the app, for engineering reasons, with the content relocated. Recording that accurately matters more than having another closure in the collection. Our interpretation, based on the two independent reports and the current state of the store listing.
What remains · 留下了什么
Google Labs occupies the space where the experiment used to live; it is a successor surface rather than a copy of AI Test Kitchen, and we did not verify any continuity of content.
The Play Store listing for the AI Test Kitchen app returns 404, which is the durable evidence that the app is gone.
No longer reachable; recorded for the historical record only.
Two independent reports from the same day carry Google's spokesperson confirmation; both are cited so the wording is not sourced to a single outlet.
What the makers learned · 制作者总结
Google's stated reason for the mobile shutdown is that a single web experience can be updated more rapidly and easily across all devices, instead of pushing separate Android, iOS and web updates.
The confirmation reported by two outlets covers the mobile apps specifically: the playground itself continued on the web rather than ending.
The recorded status is 'pivoted' rather than 'discontinued' because the mobile shutdown moved the experience to another surface instead of ending it; only the app listings and the web playground later stopped.
The web playground's end is not dated anywhere we could verify, so this entry does not claim a date for it; the recorded end covers the app listings.
This is the archive's clearest case of a shutdown that says nothing about whether the idea worked. What ended was a delivery surface — two app store listings — while the same content continued on the web, and the stated reason was engineering cost, not demand. The second lesson is about how such an ending is recorded: the mobile shutdown is well sourced through a spokesperson quoted by two outlets, while the end of the web version left no announcement at all, so an archive that only follows announcements would report half a story.
If someone tried again · 重做问题
The playground moved to the web for maintainability and the web version later stopped without explanation. The question worth carrying forward is what a lab owes the people who tried its experiments: if a demo was good enough to collect feedback from, is there an obligation to say when it ends, or is a public experiment understood to be temporary by default.

Supports: The delisting of the mobile apps, the Google spokesperson confirmation that the mobile apps are shutting down while the playground moves to the web, the stated maintainability reason, the app's launch history and the MusicLM swap that ended the earlier demos.
Supports: Independent corroboration, from the same day, that Google confirmed the app was being retired rather than withdrawn temporarily. Verification limit: cited from its headline and search result, because the article body blocks automated readers.
Supports: The current state of the app store presence: the listing returns HTTP 404, which is the durable evidence that the app is no longer distributed.
Supports: That the surface which now occupies the experiment's former web space belongs to Google Labs and describes a different project. Used only to date the current state, not as evidence about AI Test Kitchen itself.
